PostSubject: Apocalypse   Tue Jan 17, 2012 6:12 pm

Apocalypse

The world is going to end, they say
in December twenty-twelve.
I'm not so sure their facts are right
and so I'll need to delve.

Sometimes they're built around scary science
with real truth in short supply.
They hope that most won't understand
or at least won't spot the lie.

Religion of sorts is often the excuse
that allows these tales to be told
When really what it's all about
is people who can be controlled.

They flock like sheep to listen to seers
with nary a thought for themselves
but many a book could refute their fears
you'll find them on library shelves.

But all these prophecies have one common thread
they feed on man's discontent.
The need to feel there's something 'out there'
that they're powerless to prevent.

But if we can turn this around just a little
give a reason for living, not dying.
Then perhaps we'd all benefit from the change
because we'd be smiling, not crying.

And if in the process we banish some fears
and perhaps one another embrace.
We can give the world a positive spin
and make it a happier place.

I'll do my bit, if you promise to do yours
I'll live life with a smile not a frown
I'll enjoy my time here, for as long as it lasts
and not worry about any melt down.

Dear **Ian**: ~The end~ may be nigh,
yet you aren't appearing to sigh.
You seem to be chuckling
at all the strange buckling
of belts on the varying ~fry.~

Smile

A very sensible poem Ian, with a message I fully endorse.
I daresay they will have a panic next year because it has 13 at the end Wink

A good poem about the possible Apocalypse, Ian! Very Happy

I like your thoughts about it. This poem would fit really well into the January Challenge, if you're interested.

It just goes to show you that people still really love to be frightened by a 'ghost' story or two, even if it is on an Apocalyptic scale!

Best,
Carol

Thanks for your comments - as always - Carol. I don't even know how to enter the competition here, so perhaps we let this one slide. You comments are really all the reward I value.

That would be nice if you entered some of the monthly challenges, Ian! Very Happy

Your work is very good and you might find some of them fun!

It's quite easy to enter a poem in the monthly challenge.

You just go to the Index and scroll down to Poetic Challenges.

Then you click on the Monthly Site Challenge section. You will see all the challenges listed by month and then you click on this month's challenge.

You hit the Reply button so that your poem follows the other poems that have been posted for the month.

Then you copy and paste your poem from Microsoft Word on your computer into the Message Body section. Don't forget to put in the title of your poem!

When you are finished, you hit the Send button! Voilà! cheers

Good luck! Very Happy

Best,
Carol

Done Carol. Many thanks for your help.
I must spend more time on the site, although child minding for two grandsons (2 1/2 & 1 1/2) does not leave much spare!!
Have read yours on the challenge - wonderful. Will read more of yours soon - I promise!!
Take care
