Success

How do you measure success in this world.
It's difficult to be sure.
It all depends on who you are,
and what you feel is pure.

For there are those who think
that money matters most.
And then spend all their time in search
of what can give them boast.

They can achieve their greatest dreams
and not even see the cost
to their best and longest relationships
until they're all but lost.

They thought money would bring them happiness
and to a point it does.
But slowly friendships that they thought 'is'
they realise now are 'was'.

While others, and I feel I'm one,
have more mundane desires.
We prefer to focus on people
and light friendships little fires.

We may not go to all the grand places
and meet all the top brass and chatter.
But we'll enjoy our journey through life,
because we know people matter.

And in the end, when all is said
We've people around us who care.
While the others who thought they had everything,
realise they've no one to share.

They're reduced to paying for everything
in order to have some 'friends'
While we'll have people beside us,
right up until our end.

Dear **Ian**: Such verses my foes
might give the best snot in a nose.
I'm rather phlegmatic
while up in some attic
the Greek in me punches in >>'PROSE' ...

A good poem, Ian! Very Happy

You are so right that determining success should be an individual thing.

So many people jump on the bandwagon of believing that the conventional goals of money and power will bring them success and satisfaction only to find out later that it may have brought them more unhappiness than they could have imagined.

Your poem has an excellent message! Very Happy

It's important to stay true to your own beliefs and values!

Best,
Carol

Ian L.,
You are so right! It's like the saying goes, "money does not buy happiness."
Your friend,
