PostSubject: Bonfire Night   Mon Nov 07, 2011 6:16 pm

Bonfire Night
Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament
For he wanted to kill King James
This was over 400 years ago
But some people said he was framed

So now on November 5th
Most children like to make a guy
Then they build a bonfire
And place the guy on high

Gloves and scarves are usually worn
For the weather can be damp and cold
Some people will hold sparklers
But not babies or the old

Lots of people go out on the night
To see a really good fire
But people who have dogs and cats
Keep them inside else it is dire.

So Bonfire night is November 5th
And fires are hot and high
Then as the fireworks are let off
So colourful is the sky
Doreen

Steve just thought I would post this poem but you clever people will most probably post a more appropiate poem Good Photo actually it looks like a Catherine wheel to me May be wrong or even London Eye but then it wouldn't be lit up like that

I think your poem is most appropriate Doreen, and you are right about the London eye. Just a picture I found on the web.
Maybe it's time we burnt an effigy of Bin Laden, the Catholics seem not too bad these days Wink

Steve steak and chips Riggs.

A good poem about Guy Fawkes Night, Doreen Very Happy

I don't think that we have a holiday like that in the US.

In New Mexico we have a local event called the Burning of Zozobra, or Old Man Gloom.

It takes place in September and there is a huge puppet-like effigy that is built and is filled with pieces of paper on which people have written their problems for the year.

Zozobra is burned along with fireworks, and a crowd of people screaming, 'Burn him! Burn him!'

It's a yearly tradition that probably is similar to some events in Mexico.

Oh, Steve...why not burn some Catholics anyway...just in case... Wink

Best,
Carol

They forecast rain
but a clear night sky
formed the backdrop
for rockets reaching high
multi-coloured stars
exploded out of sight
screeches, bangs and whistles
permeated the night
distantly the rumble
of falling bombs sounded
displays so organised
we were surrounded
later we surrendered
without a fight
as silence settled
in deadly quiet
