| It was very enjoyable reading everyone's poems for crushed rose's October Challenge. Thanks for choosing my poem, crushed rose! I'll try to make this an easy challenge for the month of November. I was thinking that it would be fun to write about something that is secretive. It could be an actual secret or a mystery such as an unsolved crime. It could take place inside your mind like a fantasy or in a real place. Just let your imagination flow! Please let me know if you've already done this one and I'll choose another topic! I'll post a poem of my own to start things off! Good luck to everyone! Best, Carol |

| Cabinet of Curiosities
In my cabinet of curiosities I keep the secrets to many things On some nights I unlock the doors and reach for my magic set of keys
Hidden in a secret drawer somewhere is a chimera who imagines love to be an elixir, so it conjures up a tiny gypsy to dance wildly in colored veils before my eyes, lighting up the insides of my heart with bonfires…
This tiny gypsy bewitches and beguiles me, and then disappears from sight, into tiny bottles filled with magic potions of disguises, while the shadows flutter across my heart and conjure up desires…

| that's a hard act to follow, Carol !! it's a good picture, and I like the idea of a secret cabinet you can unlock when alone, and follow the dream it produces for a while

| Two oldies for you, Carol ... to keep you busy Secrets When the wheat is quiet and still No breeze flowing from the hill It holds the secrets of badger cubs play In flattened places hidden deep away Of foxes and their cubs at night Practising their ways for flight Small mice hide amid the ears As the owls circle, their biggest fear Butterflies and insects flit in hidden bowers Drawing nectar from poppy flowers And it holds the secret of my love and I As holding hands we wander by Then when the wind is blowing In myriad ears a rustle, growing As secrets are passed around The ears, to a whispering sound Boxes
Half-life, emotions filed away Stacked boxfuls in dark corners of disuse Hidden, until one unexpected day Escaping, sensing freedom, breaking loose Intense, overwhelming, spring from down deep Mind and body trembling, caught unaware Suddenly woken from unknowing sleep Eyes opened wide, enchantment, with you there
Now when I gather those feelings to stow Hiding them safely from view, for a while Strands linger outside, boxes overflow Seeing you, they escape into my smile
And I yearn to throw those boxes away Free those emotions, embrace them, and stay

| Thanks for your two excellent poetry submissions, crushed rose!! In the first one, 'Secrets,' I really like the way that you have described the secret world of the critters in the wheat field and how they might perceive the sounds of a couple passing by. You have created the secret world of the critters within the secret world of whispers that are made by a human couple. I really like the way that these two worlds intercept each other. I also got an image of a cornfield with listening 'ears!' Your second poem, 'Boxes,' implodes with emotion! This is a really great poem!! You have taken the contents from old boxes and conjured up the feelings and images of a past relationship. I love the way that for a few moments you are caught up in the emotions and memories of this past relationship and it seems so real and vivid to you. You are torn between knowing that the relationship has passed and wanting it to be revived in some way. Well crafted and excellent word choices!! Thanks for posting these two excellent poems!! Best, Carol |

| I haven't written poetry for ages, but I think this old one is appropriate, Carol.
A Secret Place
Under the trees along the track (Fields and moorland back to back) In the dappled shade and light Myriad insects dance in flight Walk the path to the centre place And there be lost in time and space An ancient quarry, wild, overgrown Nature has claimed it for her own Derelict buildings open to sky While up above the Buzzards fly Some strange creature in the stream Weed covered ripples all that's seen Wild deer warily slake their thirst The rabbits probably came here first Moorland ponies stay to crop Grass that grows among the rock Willows have colonized the quarry base A wildlife haven, a Secret Place. _________________ Regards Val |

| Thanks for posting your poem, Val I love your images of a secret wildlife place! Your images are very descriptive and it's easy to feel that you are right there in the wildlife haven. Your rhyming pattern flows smoothly and I love your keen observations of the activities that take place there. Your words paint a wonderful picture of a secret place. I'd love to go there myself! An excellent write!! Best, Carol |

| Sorry not to have been around for a while, just been rather busy.. but thanks for posting such an interesting challenge, Carol. and here's my attempt...
Shadows in the Dark
As I lay awake, It was the shadows In the dark that Told me you were there. That play of dark Within the darkness, That feeling of Your presence Breathing there, It was our secret time, Then you were gone. And in that empty space, All that was left Was your memory.

| A very interesting poem, Gilly It has a haunting, secretive quality to it that I like a lot. I can't quite tell what is real and what might be memory which makes it intriguing. Certainly there is or was a living, breathing presence in the poem that lingers on. An excellent poem!! Thanks for posting it! Best, Carol |

 | Subject: Your Diary by Berry van Hagen Wed Nov 23, 2011 5:17 am | |
| Every page tells a story. Deep secrets of the soul. Some radiate such joy. Others are smudged with tears. Only written words remain. Silent witnesses of the pain that you wished to forget when the pages were still wet. What wouldn't you like to give if you could take it away. Instead you wrote them down, all those disturbing thoughts. So many you've written. Also nice memories of that boy who was completely smitten when he saw your eyes, your hair. You read your diary, it's all there. It's like looking in the mirror. Reflections of the past. Some things you loved to share with that girlfriend who was just the same. Both sure that your friendship would last. Every word you ever wrote is true. Your heart would never tell lies. That's why the lock is there so unwelcome prying eyes who think they have the right won't ever invade your privacy or find out things you don't want them to know. They wouldn't even apologize and some would use it against you. These intimate feelings, these secrets belong to you and you alone. Every word in that little book. Every thought you ever penned is in that diary on every page. Through the years it became your friend. antropolis Subject: Re: Your diary Sun Nov 20, 2011 2:49 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- that was good Berry! ~Scott Gilly J Subject: Re: Your diary Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:30 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's said that writing a diary can be good therapy... and it will keep your secrets for you. My daily persuasions pursue many legions as those might illumine some stem. Carol Perroni Subject: Re: Your diary Yesterday at 3:40 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This brings back memories of my childhood when I used to have one of those diaries that locks with a key. I used to write in it a lot and hide it in different places. I do remember that it poses certain privacy compromises when the key is lost and you have to find someone to help you open it... I enjoyed reading your poem a lot, Berry Your poem could have been posted in the November Challenge section because this month's subject is 'secrets' and your poem fits in perfectly with this theme. Best, Carol With Berry's permission, I'm just reposting his poem and comments into the November Challenge. |

| Hi everyone! Thanks for submitting your poems to the November Challenge! I enjoyed reading all of them. Since there were so many poems submitted this month, it was a very tough decision for me to choose one! .......Whoops!......I mean that even though there were so very few entries, they were of such a high quality that you made my job very difficult! I've read every poem over a few times and really I just couldn't decide which one I liked better than another one, because they are all so unique and they all had such a different approach! But alas!.... Choose I must!...So I think that I'll pass December's baton over to Val for her wonderful poem titled, 'A Secret Place!' I really enjoyed the way that Val described the secret habitat for animals and other critters! Well done, Val! Congratulations! Best, Carol |
