| Childhood Games 1940-1960
Summer-time, the living was exciting There was no TV’s or computers For you had to entertain yourself While playing with sisters or brothers. You also played with the other kids While playing lots of games in the street And if you ever saw a car on the road It was such a rarity to meet. For the street was then your playground Where many good times you then had As many people travelled by bus or bike Not many children seemed sad.
The marble season arrived after Easter So kids carried around a bag of pleasure Little balls of colour, either glass or ceramic Yet a ball bearing was certainly a treasure Stilts, well they caused endless amusement For at least a few weeks of the year You staggered down street, two foot higher But if you tried dancing, a fall you would fear. Roller skating came before skateboarding But you needed a smooth surface While many children liked hopscotch So there were numbers squares all over the place.
Saturday morning was picture time Many good adventure films on a small screen Cowboys and Indians were always favourites So many young lads with cap guns could be seen Lads would also collect frog spawn and snails And bring sticklebacks home in jam jars No one bothered then about health and safety It just wasn’t a problem in past years Girls would chant rhymes while skipping With one long rope several could skip together Playing out in the street when you were young Was fun as long as you got good weather.
Doreen E Hampshire I wrote this poem following on from Karen's theme "REMEMBER HOW IT WAS" topic August 2010 _________________ |

| Doreen, I remember all these things (of course, I never participated in the jump rope, being a boy and all...) We were one of the last families to get video games, I think, and I don't remember being left out because of it. Sometimes I want to go back to the simpler days when you created your own fun. Good write. Your friend, David Fox |

| I'm especially jealous of the phrase "bag of pleasure" about marbles. I honestly wish I'd written that! I did play marbles a few times, but I think in many ways that your childhood isn't getting older, it's getting BETTER, Doreen. Makes me wish I'd been there. So I feel left out in some ways. Maybe those of us a few years before or a few years after, will have problems understanding the kids (and arch-bishops...) TODAY, let alone those of us in each category. I think nostalgia can be a very powerful force, make us ALL step back and re-think, maybe. Thanks for posting this, Doreen. |

| I loved this, Doreen. Wonderful memories. Skipping and marbles - great pleasures. Do you remember "doublers" where you turned the skipping rope twice as fast. We had so many skipping rhymes in thosedays! And collecting beautiful marbles too - we were always buying unusual ones. Sadly Mum gave mine away when I left home. I was horrified to lose them!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

| Just thinking the same. It has engendered so much response and nostalgia for us all. Difficult to vote for yourself for POTW but now you have popular demand....

| That poem brings back memories, when we could all play out in the street, not as many cars back then, not much tv, no computers, and we had the best things of all... imagination! |

| I somehow missed this the first time around Doreen, so good one Gilly for bringing it up again. I remember all those things too I couldn't smuggle my cap gun into morning matinee though. _________________ Steve www.noaddress.co.uk
