| Thank you very much Steve for chosing my poem. It was a very pleasent surprise. I have given the December subject a lot of thought, but didn't come up with anything, so I googled & found this site. http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/Xmas/pantomines.html My challenge to you all is to write a poem, in rhyme or prose, about........... A pantomime you have seen. A script for a pantomime scene of your own. A piece about the history of pantomime.
Any one of those or all 3 if you like.Have fun, Folks _________________ Regards Val |

| PANTOMIME HISTORY Pantomime history goes back farther than we can document. Legend has it that men used to tell stories of their hunting expeditions or even the history of their tribes using only body movements and facial expressions.
"Pantomime" comes from the Greek word "pantomimus" and literally means "imitating all." Originally it was a form of dance that told a story and was very popular among the Romans - right up until public displays were forbidden by the Christian church!
In the 17th Century, the Commedia dell'Arte, an Italian renaissance improvisation theater, spread throughout Europe and England, establishing itself mostly in Paris. The stars of these productions were characters that included Pagliaccio or Pedrolino (known as Pierrot in English) or Arlecchino (Harlequin).
The ability to "pantomime" meant being able to communicate beyond language and/or class barriers. This allowed traveling groups from England to perform throughout Europe without the need to learn the languages of the local areas. You would often see various elements of the Commedia dell'Arte in the acts of these traveling entertainers.
The 18th Century saw a danced form of the Commedia dell'Arte which became known as "Pantomime." These pantomimes helped to loosen the restrictions that high society had on forms of music and dance that they considered acceptable. The pantomimes were considered "true art."

| That is a very interesting piece, Margaret, I didn't know where Pantomime had originated. It certainly has evolved over the years. _________________ Regards Val |

| Interesting, Margaret - I wonder how pantomime has developed into the almost farcical nowadays |

| Children expectant of a treat Fidget and shuffle in their seat Excitement builds, the curtain climbs The silliness of the pantomime’s
Where boys are girls, and girls are boys The audience shouting, making noise Boo, and hiss the baddie, they all fear And for the hero they all cheer
He cannot creep up, this is true They all shout “he’s behind you” Grown up’s and children, all pretending Always with a happy ending |

| Panto's a marvel; Panto's a lark. Time to dress up As an elf, witch or shark.
Panto's a riot; Panto's a scream. Join in the shouting - Engage in the dream.
Panto's addictive! Panto's the biz! Oh no it isn't..? ... Oh yes it is! |

| Pantomime
The panto season is in full flow But sadly this year I did not go I always found them so much fun For children, adults, both old and young Men dress up as women And women are sometimes men Telling stories of long ago All well known. All know the score Jack and the beanstalk, or Puss in boots All popular children’s books Well known faces from TV appear Soap operas. Pop stars, which can make their career The most popular character is usually the dame These people are never taken seriously again. These panto scripts they usually rhyme In fact they do it most of the time So popular around the land Especially at Christmas, so give a big hand. For the meaning of the pantomime Is to express oneself in mine.
