He looked at me
There was silence
His eyes lowered

And I recalled
His small body in my arms
Just 12 weeks old
And we locked eyes
And all his needs were simple.

I sighed.

He caught the sound
And glanced up
Our eyes met
But there was wealth
Of confusion
Of conflicting emotions
In that look
As he is torn between
Loyalties of the past
And loyalties of the present

I put my hand out
And he embraced me
Then he pulled back
Eyes lowered
Then they met mine
The clock ticked loudly
The cat brushed against my legs
“Don’t worry, “ he said,
“It’ll be allright Mum.”
