‘Have a little patience’
I listen toTake That sing
Perfect for this traffic jam
When I can’t do anything
‘I’ve been driving in my car’
By Madness, makes me smile
When I have been sitting there
For an hour for every mile
‘24 hours from Tulsa’?
If Gene Pitney had been here
It would take him longer than that
To get almost anywhere
Just as Roy Orbison sings
I feel like ‘I drove all night’
Yet it’s only morning rush hour
So that really can’t be right

‘Autobahn’ by Kraftwerk
Is just the thing to play
As I finally reach the slip road
To the M5 motorway
Then I put on Meat Loaf
For nothing works as well
As I finally get up speed
And drive ‘Like a Bat out of Hell’

...
I’m writing this poem fast
One hundred words a minute
Already the first verse is past
But I’m wondering what to put in it

Words are racing around my head
Neurons firing at the speed of light
Glancing back at what I said
That’s ok, it rhymes alright

Yet no matter how quickly my words flow
As I rush toward the last
My imagination seems so slow
My idea’s are not quite that fast
...

Wink

SPEED

Many people speed each day
Not a real good thing to do
Accidents happen way too often
It can happen to me or you

Children adults even teens
Are killed on the roads all the time
So take time to reflect on this
You can' always stop on a dime

Speed is so scary I see it often on the news
Cars crushed in so badly it's hard to recognize
They type of vehicle it is the remains is more profound
Sometimes the driver of an accident is no where to be found

How can a person drive so fast without a thought in mind
That this could very well be them they can be hit from behind
Or when they decide to pass in front a chance they take so easily
I hope everyone will heed and stop think and be accident free

Looks like I've set one which displeases.

Oh dear.
What a pity.
Never mind.

Here's one from years ago which is broadly in line with the subject...

Today, If Possible

Excuse me but I wonder - did you hear what I just said?
The gist was to encourage you to get out all the lead!

I don't see why I should put up with all your blatant messing
When even a poor soul like you can see that time is pressing.

I wish I could affirm that, in all honesty, I'm happy.
Regrettably, you're failing to get on and make it snappy.

It's time and time again I've said a move on you should get,
And yet what do I see? - A slowing down, it's safe to bet.

To say the least, you must admit, it's very irritating
To find that, after all this time, unjustly, I'm still waiting.

I have to say that I'm still waiting for the right reaction:
In other words that, of your digit, there should be extraction.

So, please be clear, I don't intend to further fret or worry:
I'm sharpening this axe to underline that you should HURRY!!

© Rowan Hicks

Don't worry - it will scarcely be considered for the rosette!

(Better late than never. I am speeeeeding to get this in on time)

Late For Work

I put the sports car into gear
and toddled out the gate.
Looking at the dashboard clock
I saw that I was late.
I spun the wheel and hit the floor,
the tyres squeeled loud in pain
protesting at their great misuse
and screaming with the strain.

I reached the bend and swung the wheel,
Two tyres left the road.
threw it into overdrive
as power through it flowed.
The speedometer higher rose
as the pedal hit the floor.
I hoped I wouldn't meet a car
as round the hills I tore.

Flashing past the fields and homes
I felt like I was flying.
I admit I loved the feel of speed
To say other would be lying.
Arriving at my place of work
I skidded to a stop,
but as I stepped out of my car
I was arrested by a cop.

Thank you, Rowan. I don't know that I deserve it for being so tardy. I'll try to post sooner next time.
